According to other reviews, the book was supposed to be one of the best for 2007. As a result of this my hopes were high. It’s interesting how the mindset you have going into something can affect your experience with it. If you expect to love something and it disappoints, it feels like a bigger let-down than if you had gone into it not expecting anything one way or another. If you expect to hate something and end up loving it, it’s similarly a pleasant surprise. You might even love it more because you didn’t expect to.

The story positions in Afghanistan. That in and of itself is a great premise since this is a location we hear about so much on TV, yet we have no idea what is like to actually live there. It is about Miriam, her mother, her father and the various issues that they encounter. Emotion is high in this story. The plot has a lot of shocking twists that are unexpected. You can’t help but feel for Miriam as she faces so many tragedies. But there is hope as you will read.
