I recently discovered and purchased A Thousands Spending Suns by Khaled Hosseini. According to other reviews, the book was supposed to be one of the best for 2007. As a result of this my hopes were high. It’s interesting how the mindset you have going into something can affect your experience with it. If you expect to love something and it disappoints, it feels like a bigger let-down than if you had gone into it not expecting anything one way or another. If you expect to hate something and end up loving it, it’s similarly a pleasant surprise. You might even love it more because you didn’t expect to.

The story positions in Afghanistan. That in and of itself is a great premise since this is a location we hear about so much on TV, yet we have no idea what is like to actually live there. It is about Miriam, her mother, her father and the various issues that they encounter. Emotion is high in this story. The plot has a lot of shocking twists that are unexpected. You can’t help but feel for Miriam as she faces so many tragedies. But there is hope as you will read.

The photos are in order from the five main time periods of his work, which reveal Adams’ progression artistically. It spans from his first images taken in 1916 in the High Sierra and Yosemite through to those taken in the ‘40s in the National Parks, and also includes his amazing work done in the 1960’s. The book includes stories behind his life correlating to certain photographs he took. It is remarkable that any artist could have come up with this many beautiful and important visual masterpieces in a single lifetime.

Adams’ black and white work is stunningly detailed and imaginative. Whether you are a long-time fan of his catalog or a newcomer, you will be enthralled by this compilation. It is amazing to think that he was already doing such fine work when he was only 14 years old! You will not be able to get enough of these wonderful portraits. It will be a permanent fixture on your coffee table and a conversation piece for many years to come.
